Recently, Niagara Bottling Company issued a voluntary recall of spring water produced at two of its Pennsylvania plants. The recall was due to notification by one of its spring sources that E. coli had been detected. This means that the water may have been contaminated by animal or human waste. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some strains of E. coli are harmless, while other strains cause symptoms like cramps and headaches and even be deadly if ingested.
Bottle brands affected by the recall include Nature’s Place, Best Yet, Acadia, 7-Eleven, Morning Fresh, Shoprite, Wegman’s, Superchill, Niagra, Acme, Big Y, Western Beef Blue and Pricerite. Fortunately, there have no reports of illness due to this contamination scare. The Niagara Bottling Company has discontinued its partnership with the spring source responsible. It has warned buyers to either boil the water before ingesting it or drinking alternative bottled water. All around, Niagara Bottling Company did the right thing in issuing a recall.
